Science

Science is everywhere, and our children are growing up in a world where they need to be scientifically educated in order to succeed. The Science curriculum at Beechview uses the National Curriculum and aims to nurture inquisitive scientists and ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics;

  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them;

  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

  • are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

We aim to ensure that our students are receiving an exciting and stimulating science curriculum in which all our children, from whatever background, will be excited by scientific concepts and learn the skills of investigation and enquiry they need to fully engage with science in the world around them as well as in their future careers.  To ensure a smooth transition from their infant setting within the subject of Science, we review the ‘Working Scientifically skills’ building upon the KS1 curriculum and preparing them for the KS2 science curriculum.

Our approach to Science links with our drive to use enquiry-based learning wherever it is relevant. We endeavour to help children develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of scientific enquiry to answer their own questions. Where possible, science is taught through the use of first-hand practical experiences in the Phizz Lab, school grounds, local area or field trips. This allows children to explore and talk about their ideas; ask their own questions; compare and contrast functions, relationships and interactions within a more meaningful context.

During their time at Beechview Academy, children will develop and build upon this knowledge, as well as be introduced to topics such as states of matter, light, sound, forces, electricity, evolution and space.

At Beechview, scientific enquiry should be taught throughout all science topics and working scientifically should form the backbone of all science lessons. The curriculum is enriched through science-based visits, and visitors are strongly encouraged to join us – especially those who have a particular area of expertise.
